What is the Flex-Matic Semi-Automatic Flat Label Applicator?

The Flex-Matic is a semi-automatic tabletop label applicator from Cleveland Equipment that applies pressure-sensitive labels to flat products. You slide a flat item into the machine, and the label is dispensed and applied automatically. It is available in two versions: the Flex+Matic OS and the Flex-Matic Flat Labeler. It's a fast, affordable alternative to hand labeling for packaging, mail rooms, electronics and small manufacturers.

What products can the Flex-Matic flat labeler label?

The Flex-Matic labels almost any flat product, including bags, pouches, envelopes, mailers, printed circuit boards (PCBs) and CD/DVD cases. The Flex+Matic OS handles objects up to 0.2" thick. Adjustable product guides keep each item lined up, so labels go in the same spot every time.

How fast is the Flex-Matic label applicator?

The Flex-Matic feeds labels at 5" per second and can label up to 1,200 flat products per hour (about 20 per minute). Actual output depends on how quickly the operator inserts and removes each item. An automatic label counter is included, so you can track how many labels you've applied in each run.

What are the label requirements for the Flex-Matic?

Labels for the Flex-Matic must meet these requirements: Core: 3", extending all the way to the edge of the roll. Die-cutting: die-cut with about a 1/8" gap between labels. Label width: up to 11-3/4". Narrow labels work if the backing paper is at least 1-1/2" wide. Thickness: as thin as 1 mil. Copy position: any "label out" copy position works. Can the Flex-Matic apply clear labels?

Yes, with an option. The standard Flex-Matic sensor is made for opaque (paper or white film) labels, and an optional black-line sensor is available for transparent, no-label-look labels. The standard NO-ADJUST optical sensor needs no adjustment or cleaning. It recalibrates itself every time the machine is turned on and stays programmed as long as the machine is on and used at least once an hour.

How do you set where the label goes on a flat product with the Flex-Matic?

You set label position on the Flex-Matic in two directions: Distance from the leading edge: labels start at least 7/8" (22 mm) from the leading edge of the product. Subtract 0.9" from where you want the label to start, then enter the result on the digital display. For example, for a 2.62" placement, enter 1.72. The display shows inches, tenths and hundredths, with a button under each digit. Side-to-side position: move the feed guides, or slide the label roll left or right. If you slide the roll, check that the labels still pass through the label sensor.

How do you load labels on the Flex-Matic?

To load labels on the Flex-Matic: Mount the roll between the two aluminum roll guides, and compress the tension spring about 1/8". Pull the locking assembly forward. With labels facing down, unroll about 2 feet of labels. Thread the labels under the label drive roller, through the label sensor, and around the front edge of the dispensing table. Bring the labels back under the locking assembly and over the drive roller, keep them tight, and snap the locking assembly into place. Run the backing paper to the included waste rewinder and attach the spring clip. Turn the machine on and tap the foot switch until one label dispenses with each tap.

What should you do if the Flex-Matic keeps feeding labels without stopping?

If the Flex-Matic feeds labels continuously or stops partway through a label, check these first: The labels pass through the label sensor behind the front rubber roller. The sensor is rotated up so its front edge just touches the rod in front of it. The roll has proper tension, with the spring compressed about 1/8". For round or odd-shaped labels, the longest point of the label lines up with the sensor's light beam, about 1/2" from the end of the sensor. After turning the machine on, tap the foot switch a few times so the sensor can recalibrate on a label gap; the front light shows when it detects one. How is the Flex-Matic built?

The Flex-Matic is built for years of daily use. It has laser-cut steel side frames, 6061-T6 aluminum dispensing tables with a hand-milled peel edge, and dual shaded-pole AC motors made in the USA. A waste rewinder and an automatic label counter are included, and the design helps reduce bubbles under the label.

What warranty comes with the Flex-Matic, and how do you get support?

The Flex-Matic is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the original retail purchase date. Cleveland Equipment can diagnose most problems over the phone. For warranty repairs within the U.S., Cleveland Equipment repairs the machine and ships it back by standard ground shipping at no charge; the customer pays to send it in. Flex+Matic label applicator enables the user to label all kinds of flat objects by simply setting the desired spacing using the digital readout and guides. Then insert the flat object. Once the object is inserted the label is applied automatically. Now, Insert the next one, as fast as you feed the machine, it will label! Bags, envelopes, pouches, PCBs, and even slimline CD/DVD cases. With our 5″ per second feed, most objects are labeled in less than 2 seconds! This allows the user to quickly insert another to start the procedure again. Once a rhythm is established objects are labeled VERY quickly. Loading is a “snap”, just feed the labels between the dispensing tables then through the patented feed-roll assembly and “snap” into place.

The Flex-Matic has a 11 3/4″ width space to label your flat object! This applicator can label any flat object fast and accurately up to 1/4″ thick at speeds up to 1,200 pieces per hour!

Product Details:

Side frames: Laser-Cut from the drawing quality steel then formed, countersunk, de burred, and inspected one at a time at our facility.

Dispensing Tables: formed out of 6061-T6 Aluminum. The peel edge is hand milled to spec within .001″ using a special hand-made cutting tool to get that perfect peeling edge needed to dispense labels without tearing the backing paper. (35 years of perfecting the peeling action) Dispensing tables are POLISHED with ultra-fine polishing compound so paper flows freely around the plate.

Motors: The Flex+Matic uses DUAL motors that are shaded pole AC, and made in the USA to our specifications. (No CHEAP 12v motors here!)
